Your Step-by-Step Guide to Conquering the FAFSA

The Money Dad Financial Fuel

Let’s face it: the FAFSA form might just be the most intimidating thing about going to college that doesn’t involve dorm showers. But it doesn’t have to be! Here’s a humorous (yet professional) guide to help you breeze through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) like a pro. Let’s get you one step closer to that sweet, sweet financial aid.

Step 1: Gather Your Army (a.k.a. The Documents)

Before you dive in, take a moment to assemble the necessary documents. Think of these as your FAFSA Avengers:

Your Social Security Number: Write it down or memorize it; no one wants to go searching for that mid-application.

Your Parents’ Social Security Numbers: Because FAFSA likes to be thorough.

Federal Tax Information: Yours and your parents’ most recent tax returns (e.g., 1040 forms).

W-2 Forms: If you, or your parents, worked in the last year.

Bank Statements and Records of Investments: You’re basically a mini CFO now, so get those statements ready.

Records of Untaxed Income: Yes, they really do need to know about everything.

Don’t have these on hand? Start texting your parents—they’ll love that you’re asking them for help with taxes.

Step 2: Create Your FSA ID (and Yes, Remember It)
